More than a label

What handcrafted means at Enigma

Handcrafted is a philosophy rooted in experience, engineering and an unwavering commitment to quality. While modern bicycle production is increasingly driven by automation and volume, we continue to build our Signature frames individually.

Every frame reflects decades of accumulated knowledge. Traditional frame-building skills sit alongside modern design, precision tooling and carefully controlled processes to create bicycles that perform, endure and inspire pride of ownership.

Control at every stage

Built by hand, built to last

Keeping design, fabrication and finishing under one roof gives our workshop team direct control over alignment, joint quality and every visible detail. It also creates a continuous feedback loop: what we learn from building informs the next design.

The result is not simply a frame assembled in Britain, but a bicycle shaped by the people who understand how its material, geometry and construction work together.

The material we know best

British-built titanium frames

Our Signature titanium frames use aerospace-grade 3Al/2.5V Grade 9 titanium and, where the design demands it, 6Al/4V Grade 5 titanium. These alloys are selected for their strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and distinctive ride characteristics.

  • Tube preparationEach tube is accurately cut and mitred for close, consistent joints.
  • AlignmentThe frame is carefully positioned and checked throughout fabrication.
  • WeldingDual-pass micro-TIG welding supports precise joint integrity and durability.
  • Ride qualityTube selection allows stiffness, compliance and handling to be tuned to purpose.

From conversation to frame

The Enigma build process

A handcrafted bicycle begins long before welding. Rider requirements, geometry, material and finishing choices are considered as one connected system.

01

Understand

We discuss where and how you ride, your fit and the character you want from the bicycle.

02

Design

Geometry, tubing, fittings, routing and component compatibility are defined with intent.

03

Fabricate

The tubes are mitred, aligned and welded by our frame builders in the Sussex workshop.

04

Finish

Each frame is inspected and completed with brushed, bead-blasted, anodised or painted details.

A timeless alternative

Reynolds 853 steel

Alongside titanium, we handcraft custom frames from Reynolds 853 steel—a material valued for strength, resilience and its distinctive ride feel.

Used for models including the Elite and Endeavour, it lets us create responsive, durable frames with contemporary geometry and compatibility while retaining the character that makes a steel bike special.

Never mass produced

No two riders are the same, and no Enigma Signature frame is built without intent. Geometry, tubing, cable routing, fittings and finishing details can be considered around the rider and the purpose of the bike.

Our in-house finishing capabilities include brushed or bead-blasted titanium, anodised graphics and bespoke paintwork—allowing the finished bicycle to be as individual as its ride.
