We’re committed to the art of British craftsmanship. Every single step of the design and construction process is performed with precision here in the UK on our Sussex premises.
Under the leadership of Joe Walker and his talented team, we encompass a collective vision of artistic endeavour, craftsmanship and engineering for ultimate performance. Handcrafted perfection is our signature and every Enigma Signature frame is a unique expression of that philosophy.
Our Signature Line-up consists of 6 base models in titanium, steel and stainless steel with broad stock geometry as well as custom options guaranteed to meet your exacting requirements.
To help your decision making please view the Signature Range and immerse yourself in the options available.
Our highly experienced team are on hand to guide you through the whole process, from start to finish we can personally ensure your bike is designed, built and assembled to the highest possible quality and to your unique specification.
The Workshop Team are at the heart of the operation, working together to make all of our Signature frames are built to the highest possible standard.
A coded welder and Enigma’s preeminent frame builder. Joe is in charge of the workshop and is arguably the best exponent of the tig-welding technique in UK frame building today, his work is without equal. A real fan of tig-welding Joe believes it is the best way to join tubes as the accuracy required is far greater than is needed for lugged or fillet brazed joints. Enigma owner Jim Walker’s youngest son Joe has instilled his own ethos of hard work and dedication to all his workmates. Despite his firm belief that tig is best, Joe is nonetheless passionate about traditional frame building skills and a Joe Walker frame will deliver the best of the old school combined with a beautiful contemporary edge.
Max is a frame builder and engineer with an attention to detail that borders on the obsessive. Max can braze and weld but his particular talent is making tube mitres that are as fine as can be seen anywhere. His skill at tube cutting and mitring is the perfect complement to Joe Walker’s welding skill. A talented frame builder Max can make almost anything and his engineering skills have proved invaluable to Enigma over the years. Not just a builder of bike frames, he also single handily constructed our fitting room as well as various parts for our jigs and other such tools that have helped to increase the efficiency of our workshop. Although it hasn’t happened yet, Max insists that he will return to serious racing soon!
Our first ever frame building apprentice Sam has been with the company for 4 years and is now fully qualified, although he is still continuing with his mechanical engineering education to HNC level. A natural talent whose academic qualifications would enable him to choose almost any career path. Sam prefers to work with his hands and has chosen the practical side of the bike industry to express his creativity. A part time musician who plays in a band Sam is a reliable, hardworking individual who is developing his skills as a frame builder very quickly and is now accomplished in all aspects of frame building. His energy and aptitude will see him go far in his career. Rides daily to work on a beautiful steel bike he built himself.
A qualified mechanical and electrical engineer, Chris went on to spend 25-years in international development. A pretty drastic career change has seen Chris recently join the Enigma team to combine his dual passion for bikes and UK manufacture. Chris divides his time as General Manager and trainee frame builder. He loves endurance riding off and on road, and has completely fallen for his Enigma Elite as weapon of choice for those blissful hours in the saddle. Not one to shirk a challenge he has also entered the Inaugural Pan Celtic Ultra Endurance Race event coming up in a couple of weeks.
Our resident mechanic Joe has been with us for over 2 years. Having previously worked for a major high street cycle retailer Joe then worked at a builder’s merchants for 7 years. Having had his fill of tea and lewd banter the cycling bug again took hold and he came on board. A dedicated family man Joe doesn’t get the time to ride as much as he’d like but he still gets out on the South Downs and manages to ride in regularly. Here at Enigma Joe undertakes all the assembly and servicing; ensuring all the bikes are set-up to perfection.
Call or email and we can start the discussion about your bike, let us know such details such as the riding you do and your objectives and we can start the process on your dream build. We offer framesets through to complete builds, in both stock geometry and full custom options, so whatever your requirements we can help you out.
Once we know what model frame you require; we’ll need to ensure the size is right. You can visit in person for a bike fit or if preferred we can send you detailed sizing forms allowing us to determine all this remotely. Alternatively if you have had a fit previously that you are happy with; send us this information and we can begin the design process.
We can now talk about the final detailing of your build, from frame finish and paint through to components and finishing kit, every aspect can now be finalised to guarantee your Enigma is exactly as desired.
Once the design and specification are complete, we require a deposit of £1000 to hold your production slot, we can then pass the drawing to workshop to start your project.
Once the workshop has worked their magic and completed your Enigma frame, we can begin to assemble it with your chosen kit ready to ship out and be ridden.
