A passion for craftsmanship, a love of cycling, and decades of experience in building and riding some of the world’s finest lightweight bicycles lies behind every bike that bears the Enigma name. We are a small British company of craftsman frame builders and we are located on the south coast of England, near the 11th century village of Westham. Here in our workshop we design and build the high-performance bicycles we sell.

That makes us something of a rarity these days, an enigma – a British bicycle firm making bicycles in Britain. Britain’s heritage for bicycle building is as old as the bicycle itself, but sadly over the last few decades almost all British bicycle manufacturing has disappeared. Enigma is passionate about and committed to the frame builders art, and all of our steel, stainless steel and bespoke titanium frames are made by us, by hand right here in rural Sussex, within an easy Mark Cavendish sprint of the oldest Norman church in England.

The frame is the heart and soul of any bike. Components can come and go, but the frame is the frame and has to be perfect right from the start. That’s why all of our frames are made from the finest seamless titanium or the lightest strongest grades of aerospace-age steel, materials we believe not only give Enigma bicycles a timeless grace and elegance, but also offer genuine competitive alternatives to the ubiquitous carbon fibre when it comes to making high-end bicycles that meet the demands of today’s exacting riders. For quickness, responsiveness and ride quality, they are second to none.

There is no production line here, and no shortcuts taken. Each length of tubing is individually selected, precision cut, mitred, then fitted together by a master frame-builder with a legacy of thousands of frames behind him. No detail is too small, from the rider’s measurements, to the scrutiny of the raw tubing at the start of the build, to the impeccable finish at the end.

We are proud of all the care and attention we lavish on our frames, and believe it imparts a special quality and character that can never be found or felt in something that’s been mass produced out of a carbon-fibre mould on a factory floor. And while the values behind the building of an Enigma frame may seem a little old-fashioned in these hurry-up days, the frames themselves are at the cutting edge of 21st century technology, design and innovation. We’re very proud of that, too.
